Computer Workshops


The following computer workshops are offered in conjunction with the NBEA 2009 Annual Convention and are available to NBEA member registrants through advanced registration only.  Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Note: Computer Workshops 1A, 1B, 2A, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, 6B, 7A, 7B, 8A, 8B, 9B, 10A, 10B, 11A, 11B, 13A, and 13B will accommodate 2 people per computer.

Note:  Computer Workshops 2B, 6A, 9A, and 12A will accommodate 1 person per computer.

1A  Google Tools: Stuff You Didn’t Know You Could Do with Google and Chrome (Beginner Level)

Google is more than just a simple search engine!! This workshop is designed to bring great new tools from Google to your desktop and web page. In this workshop participants will learn basic skills in programs such as Blogger, Picasa, and Google’s new Chrome. Participants will also learn how to add weather, calendars, clocks, and other tools to your desktop or web page. Also, we’ll delve deeper into Google as the world’s favorite search engine and show participants how to get the most effective results.

1B  Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains Accounting): Teaching and Learning Opportunities (Beginner Level)

Do you teach small business accounting software, such as Peachtree or QuickBooks? How about introducing students to accounting software that is used by mid-sized business? For more than 20 years, sports teams, chain stores, franchises, law firms, medical clinics, manufacturers, and accounting firms have used Dynamics GP (formerly Great Plains). Each participant receives Dynamics GP 10.0-Education software and a textbook.

2A  Word 2007: Beyond the Basics (Intermediate Level)

Now that you have mastered the basics in the Word program, time to step up to the next level.  In this workshop, students will begin using the more advanced features of Word including working with table calculations, merging, source citation referencing, customizing document themes, formatting illustrations and graphics, tracking changes, and customizing Word.

2B  Create Custom Demos and Tutorials with Camtasia Studio (Beginner - Intermediate Level)

Create a fully functional instructional tutorial using Camtasia Studio.  Camtasia Studio is a full-featured movie-making tutorial development software program that allows students to create professional quality video tutorials and demonstrations quickly and easily.  Come and discover for yourself how easy it is to plan, create, and complete classroom demos and tutorials.

3A  U-2 Can Learn to YouTube in Business Education (Beginner Level)
Tuesday, April 7, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Explore YouTube for teaching and learning from a teacher’s perspective.  Take advantage of the opportunity to gain hands-on experience into what YouTube has to offer for the business educator.  Participants will explore professional YouTube sights appropriate for the business education classroom, upload a video from YouTube, and transport this video into PowerPoint.  From business communication skills to marketing your program, participants will learn to enrich their classroom and enhance student learning with YouTube.  Please bring your own jump drive.

3B  Basic Blogging (Beginner Level)

Have you always wanted to start a blog but didn’t know how? This workshop will introduce you to the basics of blogging and how to use blogging as a learning and teaching tool. Topics covered include which blog sites to use for educational purposes, legal aspects to consider, and how to assess student created blogs.

4A  Expanding the Power of PowerPoint (Intermediate Level)

Have you used PowerPoint for years?  Do you think PowerPoint is only for boring presentations?  If so, come join us! This hands-on workshop will introduce teachers to a wide variety of intermediate and advanced features of PowerPoint 2007, including creating dynamic master slides, creating custom backgrounds, using Smart-Art, and adding audio and video.  Learn how to easily create posters and over-sized documents, and how to produce your own slideshows and “movies” using advanced timing and animation features.  Come join us and see how to unleash the power of your old stand-by, PowerPoint.

Explore PivotTables and Pivot Charts in Excel 2007, create supplemental components and references using Word 2007, use the Expression Builder and create calculated fields in Access 2007, and customize masters and color schemes in PowerPoint 2007.

Attendees will be given hands-on instruction on creating a database from scratch, creating and using tables, queries, forms, and reports.  Teaching tips will be included to help teachers use these news skills in their own classrooms. Attendees will be given handouts and a textbook to take with them.

8A   Integrated Microsoft Publisher with Excel, Word, and Access (Intermediate Level)
Thursday, April 9, 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Participants will create and personalize publications for a fictitious volunteer agency. Using Microsoft Publisher 2007, you will import a Word document and enhance it using Publisher features.  You will then learn how to merge an Excel address list with the Publisher email publication and how to merge an Access table with the Publisher catalog to market volunteering opportunities. You will also convert the Publisher catalog to a PDF format for easy distribution as an attachment.

8B  Adobe Acrobat: More than a Document Reader (Beginner - Intermediate)

9A  Dragon Speaks: Take Speech Recognition to a New Level (Beginner Level)
Thursday, April 9, 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

This workshop will introduce the latest version of DNS and focus on teaching tips, shortcuts and strategies for improving accuracy, troubleshooting and teaching this technology successfully.  Intermediate skills will include utilizing the software with Office 2007 and other applications, customizing voice profiles, creating dictation shortcuts/voice notations, navigating/formatting by voice, and using the Dictation Box to dictate into non-standard windows.  A resource CD with classroom activities/instructional strategies will be provided. *One person per computer

You have a blog. Now you want to customized your blog and add some new features. This workshop will introduce how to embed pictures, videos, and podcasts into a blog. The use of RSS and RSS aggregators will also be introduced.

11A  Video Editing with Movie Maker (Beginner Level)
Thursday, April 9, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Video editing is a breeze with Movie Maker.  Learn how to import video, pictures, sounds, and music to make your videos look and sound great.  Even better—you can easily add special effects, transitions, and titles.  All of this on Windows Movie Maker, the program that is probably sitting on your computer just waiting for you to use it!  Examples of student projects to use in your classroom will be included.

11B  Communicating with Visio (Beginner Level)

Learn to communicate using Visio's tools and templates to create impressive business graphics, drawings, and diagrams.  See how to integrate Visio with other MS Office products and explore the many areas in which Visio can be a useful tool for visual communication in business.

12A  Dragon Speaks—Intermediate (Intermediate - Advanced Level)

Learn to use Dragon as a productivity tool.   Participants will create a user profile, review manipulation commands, then move swiftly into document preparation and assessment (users should already be comfortable using Dragon 9.0 or an earlier version). *One person per computer.

13A  Reach More Students Through Web Conferencing: Adobe Connect Professional/Breeze (Beginner Level)
Friday, April 10, 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Learn the basics of Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional (Breeze) as you learn to: 1) Take part in a web conference and interact with other participants through text chat and whiteboard tools.
2) Create meeting rooms, add participants, and adjust participant’s roles. 3) Transmit audio and video. 4) Upload presentations from your computer. 5) Share programs or content on your computer. 6) Record an Acrobat Connect session for archiving.
