Getting Started

  • 8steps to a chartered chapter
  • 2+NBEA-member advisers required
  • $209per adviser, annually
  • $49per student, first year
  1. Review the start-up kit

The start-up kit contains your application's criteria and the sample bylaws your chapter will modify and adopt.

Note: a sponsoring adviser must submit the application for an NBHS-C chapter. Applications cannot be accepted directly from students.

  2. Meet with your school officials

Starting an NBHS-C chapter inaugurates a formal organization at your institution, so your application requires approval from your department head or applicable supervisor.

The NBHS-C justification brochure is written to help you communicate the value and purpose of a new chapter to administrators.

  3. Recruit your adviser(s)

Every NBHS-C chapter has one lead adviser, usually an educator — an instructor, professor, or similar. Start by determining who that lead adviser will be.

Additional advisers may take part in the chapter's work. Any active adviser participating in NBHS-C events must maintain professionalism through active NBEA membership and affiliation with the Council for Business Teaching and Research.

Advisers should be committed to excellence and willing to sustain their professional development commitment to the National Business Education Association.

Membership fees: $209.00 USD annually per adviser.

  4. Establish chapter bylaws

Organizations need governance, and NBHS-C chapters are no different — rules establish the structure of your chapter. NBEA provides sample bylaws in the start-up kit that you can copy, modify, approve, and enact by a vote of your chapter board.

Your institution may require approval of your chapter's bylaws, since they represent a commitment by your institution.

  5. Establish a chapter board

A chapter board includes non-student stakeholders who guide the governance of the chapter. Board members can come from any contacts you identify as stakeholders in your chapter.

Board members are not required to be NBEA members, since they may not work in education — only participating chapter advisers are. Have your board vote to approve the chapter bylaws before you submit them with the application.

  6. Submit your application

You're ready to apply once you have prepared:

    • Your adopted chapter bylaws
    • A list of your department's business courses, with descriptions
    • Your board members and their email addresses

Once your application is reviewed, NBHS-C will reply with any remediation items, an approval confirmation, and further directions. Every approved chapter receives an attractive framed charter to display at your school.

Please note: application fees are non-refundable, and chapter approval is sanctioned by the NBHS-C Governing Council.

  7. Identify your eligible chapter members

Once the NBHS-C Governing Council approves your chapter, invite eligible students to join using the unique link NBEA provides and the instructions in your approval packet.

Students must join through that unique link so their student record attaches to your school's master record — that's what makes them eligible for benefits such as special events, NBHS lapel pins, certificates, and more.

Student fees: $49.00 USD for year one, then $25.00 USD each year after.

  8. Have fun

NBHS-C provides PowerPoint templates, sample scripts, and more to help you make the most of your induction ceremonies and chapter events.

You can also join the NBHS-C advisers' community to connect with other schools and trade ideas for an excellent chapter experience.
